The weapon and armor designs come from that pre-internet period of art where nobody knew what actual medieval gear looked like, or thought too hard about how the wearer was supposed to move (thanks to cosplayers around the world for changing this)
The archetype has seen lots of pro play and is still going strong in the TCG and even the OCG since it has many customisation opportunities and can adapt to situations quickly
